To help me feel more in control of this race, I pictured it as my true Ironman: the surgery the swim, the chemotherapy the bike, and the radiation the run. Each phase requires energy and passion. And sustaining physical activity through my treatments kept me strong.

Soon after chemo ended, I began weekly hikes in the Wasatch Mountains. Slowly, I returned to the gym and added lifting, spinning, and other classes. I felt myself regaining energy and feeling normal again.

She entered the boys club 30 years ago, well before the world woke to the fact that a female could play the sport just as well as a male. She played ice hockey. She started playing at a time when that desire meant playing on a boy’s team.
